Eleven rooms above the water

Breakfast until eleven. The sea is two minutes down the steps, and nobody minds if you swim first.

The house

A 1930s bungalow that was falling into the garden, rebuilt slowly and without hurry

We kept the teak, the tiled floors and the long verandah it is named after. Everything else — the kitchen, the plumbing, the roof — is new and quiet.

The kitchen

One menu, written each morning

Whatever came off the boat at Habaraduwa, plus whatever the garden is doing. Dinner is at eight, at one table, and guests eat together unless they would rather not.
